Resolved Question: how should i upgrade my desktop computer and what parts would be compatible?

so i have a dell dimension 2400 from 2004, and a burning desire to play Stalker: Call of Pripyat. i was planning on buying an E5300 Pentium Dual-core Processor, a nVIDIA GeForce 8400GS Graphics Card, and 1GB 400MHz DDR DRAM but i'm not sure as to the compatibility and use of these parts because i don't really know much about computers, although i know that my computer only has PCI slots (not PCI express). my main qualms about compatibility are with the processor, to be honest. according to wikipedia, the minimum requirements for the game are: Intel Pentium IV 2 GHz/AMD Athlon XP 2200+, 512 MB RAM, nVidia GeForce 5900/ATI Radeon 9600/128MB DirectX 8 compatible video card and the recommended ones are: Intel Core 2 Duo E7400/AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+, 2GB RAM, nVidia GeForce 9800 GTX/ATI Radeon HD 4850/512 MB DirectX 9 or 10 compatible video card here is a summary of the stats of my computer, found through Everest home: Computer: Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition OS Service Pack Service Pack 1 DirectX 4.08.01.0810 (DirectX 8.1) Computer Name IVO-EVANS User Name Owner Motherboard: CPU Type Intel Pentium 4, 2666 MHz (20 x 133) Motherboard Name Dell Dimension 2400 Motherboard Chipset Intel Brookdale-G i845GEV System Memory 512 MB (PC2700 DDR SDRAM) BIOS Type Phoenix (07/31/03) Communication Port Communications Port (COM1) Communication Port ECP Printer Port (LPT1) Display: Video Adapter Intel Extreme Graphics 3D Accelerator Intel Extreme Graphics Multimedia: Audio Adapter Intel 82801DB ICH4 - AC'97 Audio Controller [A-1] Storage: IDE Controller Intel(r) 82801DB Ultra ATA Storage Controller-24CB Floppy Drive Floppy disk drive Disk Drive ST3120026A (120 GB, 7200 RPM, Ultra-ATA/100) Disk Drive Kingston DataTraveler 2.0 USB Device (14 GB, USB) Optical Drive _NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A (DVD:4x/2.4x/12x, CD:16x/10x/40x DVD+RW) SMART Hard Disks Status OK Partitions: C: (NTFS) 114400 MB (112003 MB free) Input: Keyboard HID Keyboard Device Mouse HID-compliant mouse Network: Network Adapter Belkin 802.11g Network Adapter (192.168.2.9) Peripherals: USB1 Controller Intel 82801DB ICH4 - USB Controller [A-1] USB1 Controller Intel 82801DB ICH4 - USB Controller [A-1] USB1 Controller Intel 82801DB ICH4 - USB Controller [A-1] USB2 Controller Intel 82801DB ICH4 - Enhanced USB2 Controller [A-1] USB Device USB Composite Device USB Device USB Human Interface Device USB Device USB Human Interface Device USB Device USB Human Interface Device USB Device USB Mass Storage Device if you guys can suggest any other useful parts i'd be extremely grateful, and i'm sorry about this long, data-filled question, but i don't have much money so if i buy a part i need to be certain beforehand that it will work. thanks for your help! more

Resolved Question: Can I print wirelessly from my Dell laptop to my HP printer?

I've already searched for this answer and nobody has answered it. For a little background info, I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit (this is the only computer I own). My printer is a HP Deskjet 6988. I have health issues and normally I have my laptop hooked straight up to my printer with a usb cable at my desk, but many times I still need to be on the computer but it's too painful to sit in my chair anymore, so I disconnect my internet (dial-up), unhook everything (printer, scanner, speakers, etc.), bring my laptop to my bed and re-hook up the phone line and power cord in a place closer to my bed (about 10ft away) and continue working. The only problem is once I move the laptop to my bed, I can't print anything if I need to (except to unhook everything again and bringing everything back to my desk). I researched this a little while back and someone told me to buy a "Printer and PC Adapter with Bluetooth Wireless Technology" (HP BT450), so I did. I put the disk in and installed the program, plugged the usb stick thing that came with it into the front of my printer like the directions say ("just plug in and you're ready to go"--not!), and the blue light just flashes fast and that's about all it does. I've gone into my settings for my printer and made it shareable, tried getting the printers bluetooth area to find my computer/printer through bluetooth, gone into the control panel and clicked on the bluetooth icon and tried to get it to recognized any bluetooths available and it's never worked no matter what I tried--money wasted. So now, what can I do, aside from buying another computer and doing some kind of expensive large complicated network thing that I've seen so many talking about (which I can't afford to do). Has anybody/company come out with a way for a single laptop user to simply print to their desktop printers wirelessly? I hope someone out there has got the answer for me. You don't know what it would mean to me if you could come up with the answer for my issue. If there is no solution to this problem, I would even appreciate someone telling me the cheapest setup I would need in order to be able to print from my laptop in my bed to my printer at my desk. Thanks in advance for any help.Simonise: I don't even know what an internet router is. As I mentioned, I have dial-up, which means all I have is a phone cord coming out of the wall and plugging directly into my computer in order to get a dial tone for internet access. more

Resolved Question: Networking several PC's into a router than only has 4 ports?

Hi there, can this be done? I work for a small organisation and I'm the closest thing we have to an IT department. By that i mean i managed the patching and wiring of 3 pcs and a printer into a thompson router and set up the phone systems! Now however we are about to have a new starter join us which means an additional pc. the issue is that on the back of the router there are 4 ports which the 3 pcs and one networked printer is connected to. how do i now then get this new and subsequent new pc's connected to the router? Do I need to buy a new router with more ports? Can i get an adapter that allows multiple connections into our floor ports which are then patched into a panel which our router is attached to? any help would be great Many thanks more

Resolved Question: Do i need a USB adapter to connect my computer to broadband internet if...?

Our household has one computer which is not WiFi enabled. However, I want to set up a wireless network so that I can access the internet in my room for my PS3. I would like to know whether it is necessary to purchase a USB adapter to keep the computer, which is not WiFi enabled, connected to the internet. The cable modem is situated close to this computer and is currently connected to the computer on Virgin Broadband via ethernet cable. Is it possible that the computer could be connected to the network via one of the ports on a cable router in a similar way that other peripherals such as printers can be connected to the network? I have not made any purchases yet, so I can not try anything out. I would just like to know if this is possible to save money. Thanks! :) more

Resolved Question: USB Webcam over Ethernet?

I want to connect my spare USB webcam to monitor my house's front door from my laptop in a room far far far away. There was a previous post on Yahoo Answers at: http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AojabjOPZToz5H0V7syGNRxJBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20090222023938AAieLY0 Basically, his method is plugging the USB webcam into a USB/ethernet adapter (plugged into a wall power outlet). For the PC, using another Ethernet to USB adaptor, plug a USB connector to both ends (PC and adaptor). Now my question is how do i remotely view the webcam on my laptop. While both sides are connected in a network over Ethernet, would i need some sort of third-party application? If so, what application would i need? I found some applications for sharing USB devices (printer, webcam, etc.) between 2 computers. But how do you share simply a webcam with a computer over ethernet? I wasn't able to find an application ..... Please help me!~Extra Details: I am using an 4-5 year old webcam. It is spherically shaped, has a tripod stand hole, the webcam itself, and a USB cord dangling from it. It is not one of those new types of wireless ethernet webcam, LAN type, or Wi-Fi. It's old old old... was going to throw it away but instead decided to 'recycle' and make a security camera =] Please don't suggest me to buy those recent webcams. The whole point was to recycle my old webcam~ Thanx more

Resolved Question: What exactly does a print server do?

I don't mean using your pc as the printer rather those devices you can buy to plug into the pc and printer. They consist of a pc card a ad 2 adapters, one for pc and one for printer?? From what i could make out you use them if you have a parallel interface printer and not a network printer? So it looks like they allow parallel printers to connect to a switch or hub so that if you had a peer-to-peer network then all pcs could access the printer via the switch?? am i right here? more

Resolved Question: How can I setup a network between 2 vista laptops, a vista computer and a xp computer?

Hi, I have wireless in both of my laptops and the vista computer is wired. My router is the Linksys WRT300N. I have got internet on all of the computers and laptops but I want to make it secure and setup file and printer sharing. When I setup WEP security for wireless then the internet worked on the wired vista computer and on both the vista laptops. I could also access the files and printers on each other of these. But not for the xp, for which I have an Belkin F5D8053 USB Adapter. On this, I couldn't connect to the internet or do file and printer sharing. I think that I got a connection for about a minute when I was playing about with it but it went away again. Also when I don't have the security then all the computers can connect together. My printers are connected to my xp computer and one of my vista laptops Thanks Very Much more

Resolved Question: Home network setup? Wired PC, wireless laptop?

I have a netgear router which my PC is wired to. My daughter's PC in her room has a netgear wireless adapter and is connected to the router wirelessly. My partner's laptop is wireless and connects to the router wirelessly. All three connect to the internet with no problems whatsoever. How do I go about making it so that we can share files, and possibly the printer attached to my PC? more

Resolved Question: What if I move my printer in the office?

For a start, I am having major difficulties installing my printer on the office server. It connects to the network using a USB cable into an adapter which has a LAN cable output. Once I have got this sorted (which I am hoping to do in the next millennium), will this printer be detectable, regardless of which LAN port it uses in the office? more

Resolved Question: How do I set up a wireless connection to a printer?

I am thinking of using a usb wireless adapter to set up a wireless internet connection. I would also like my printer to connect to my PC wirelessly. Would a usb adapter be OK to use, and could I use the same adapter that I use for the wireless network?thanks for your answers so far. I understand that the usb connection to the printer can't be used. I was asking if a usb wireless adapter for the router will serve both the router and the printer server. Hope someone can help :-)I think I get it now. The printer server responds to the router...? The info from the PC goes to the router and the router passes it on to the server? Am I finally getting the message? more
