moreOpen Question: I wasn't succesfull with installing a new usb wireless adapter, why?
current router is a b/g, internet connection is a dsl Business
usb adapter is a Netgear N 300-Dual band
I tried installing this on a Xp and a Win7 machine, I turned off all WEP,WPA, and boradcasted my SSID, I made sure to follow instructions, I even used the new software via manufacturer's web site.
I was able to see my SSID but not join. I could understand this IF MAC filtering was on but it was not.
Why could I not get on the internet?I have 4 other computers wired and wireless working fine on the network.

moreOpen Question: My camcorder doesn't have an audio jack for a mic. Is there a way to use a mic with the mini-usb jack?
I need to use my camera for video and the internal microphone isn't good enough. My camera only has a mini USB connector, so I'm wondering if there's a microphone that will plug into that, or if there's an adapter that will allow a mic to work in the mini USB jack? Preferably I'd like one of those small mics that clip on to the subject's shirt.

I know a bit about computers. Not in the I speak it's language or anything technical about it but I usually know how to deal with most problems.. So keep in mind i'm a layman.
I restarted my Acer desktop because my wireless usb adapter disconnected and wouldn't connect back up to the network, which it has done several times and usually a restart will get it to work again. This time though, when windows (Vista) had restarted at the bottom in the tray there was an "eRecovery agent" minimized. It had a move and close option along with an option which looked like it was written in chinese characters.. So i did what i thought was the best thing, i closed it..
Why did the eRecovery agent pop up? It was the first time seeing it.. Should I do anything about it, or is it okay?
moreOpen Question: Do I need to have a wireless router?
I'm thinking about going to wireless so that I can use more than one computer, and use my 360 also wirelessly, I'm not too familiar with wireless and I was wondering if I need a router if I get one of those USB wireless adapters?
I'm sure I do, but just to be sure I thought I'd ask.
Plus what wireless router brand is good and the usb adapters also?If I got more than one of those wireless usb adapters, would I need a router though?
Do those support just that one device, or would the adapters require me to have the router?
I currently only have a DSL modem hooked up to my desktop, that's why I was wondering if I needed a router so I can make this desktop and the 360 and other computers wireless also.
moreResolved Question: A lady just came into my shop and...?
pawned a PS3 and a pile of games. I've decided to hang onto it for a bit and play it before putting it on the shelf, but can't decide what game to play first.
Here are the games she sold me:
Little Big Planet
Ghostbusters
Bioshock
Rise of the Argonauts
Prince of Persia
Splinter Cell Double Agent
God of War Collection
Star Ocean The Last Hope
Sonic Unleashed
Damnation
Star Wars The Force Unleashed
Metal Gear Solid 4
Dead Space
Devil May Cry 4
The Darkness
I not much of a gamer and only play recreationally on occasion, but I'm pretty open minded about games and will play pretty much anything. Which one should I try first? Keep in mind I am compulsive and once I start playing a game I prefer to finish it before picking up a new one. So which one is not too hard but not too easy, and just generally the funnest to play?
Also, anyone have a good estimate of what I could sell the PS3 for? It's in good condition and isn't stolen. She sold it to me because her son does nothing but play it all day long, and had the paperwork and warranty to prove that she owned it. It has one controller, one PS2 controller with an adapter to connect it, all the wires, and (I'm serious about this) a USB coffee warmer connected to one of the USB plugs on it which I'm going to throw in as part of the set for a cheap joke.

So here's the deal. I just ordered a microphone from Amazon (like a stage mic), and because I have a new 27-inch iMac I'll probably have to have some kind of adapter. So my question is twofold:
- I have an Altec Lansing USB dongle that came with a microphone headset my sister bought. It has a microphone jack and headphone jack in it, and I believe it was designed to work with the original headset. Will it work with my microphone, if plugged in correctly (using 1/4 inch to 3.5mm convertor)?
- If not, what kind of adapter might I need (I'm trying to stay on a low budget so nothing ridiculous or expensive, hopefully)?

Hi so I don't pay for any internet service. But there are few local wireless network that I can connect to. The problem is that the computer I have in my living room(1st floor) are able to connect to those network using a wireless adapter(D-Link WUA-2340 RangeBooster G USB Adapter) with excellent signal. While the computer I have in the basement can only connect to some and the signal are very weak, sometimes I can't even get a signal, using the same adapter.
My first solution was just simply buy a longer USB cable so I can put my wireless adapter(D-Link WUA-2340 RangeBooster G USB Adapter) in the first floor, so I can get excellent signal. Do you think this will work?
Can anyone suggest a solution?
Many thanks in advance!

moreOpen Question: My signal strength is good but I can't connect?
I have a system running in my garage about 100ft away from the router.
The signal has always been patchy, sometimes I could be connected with two bars and fair signal strength for hours and then it will drop.
I have a Netgear WNDR3300 Rangemax Wireless-N Router and was using G type usb adapters around the house including in the garage, last week I bought a couple of N adapters hoping to improve the signal strength and range, all of the pc's connect fine except for the one in the garage. Its using the N adapter has three bars, shows connected at 1.1Mpps, 20db signal and is "good", sees loads of setups but just won't connect for more than a second or so.
I've tried both using the devices own config software as well as Windows (Xp) own software.
I haven't gone back to trying the g adapter yet as thats a backward step.
I appreciate that router positioning, walls, microwaves etc. can cause problems but what can cause no connection when the signal strength is supposedly good?Whoops, just to make it clearer with regard to my network, I can see mine along with half a dozen others and I can click on it and it will either just spend ages trying to get an ip address or conect for a second, but then lose it straight away.

I was wondering whether the problem is not having matching versions(play andsurf and share) or I don't have it setup correctly.
To make it clear, I have internet on this computer but I can't connect my usb adapter to my router for my desktops.
Thanks for your time.
moreOpen Question: How can I get better Wi-Fi reception in my apartment complex?
In my apartment complex, there is free wireless internet.
My apartment is about 100 feet from the leasing office, where I assume the access point is located.
When I first moved in, the Internet signal was decent. Now, however, I can't connect to the wireless network.
I'm currently using a Belkin Wireless G USB adapter to connect to this network, but the Windows Wireless Network Utility is telling me that there is limited or no connectivity.
How can I boost my computer's connection to or visibility of this network?
Thank you for your help!

moreOpen Question: Is it ok to use a different wireless USB adapter than the one Comcast sells with the Comcast wireless router?
We are finally upgrading to wireless in my house (thank God). My lap top supports wireless but the family computer does not, and we need a USB adapter. Comcast has N class adapter that it sells, but is $69, which is a lot more than other N class ones. Additionally, they give no product information about it on their website, which makes me a little nervous about it. Is there any reason why another brand wouldn't work or any reason why I should spend so much money on this one? The family computer is an old Dell Desktop with Windows XP, is on its last leg and about to be replaced, which is part of why I do not want to spend the money. We are going to get a new computer with built in wireless tech soon any way. Thoughts?

moreOpen Question: I broke my computers internet port thingy. Is there an alternate way for me to connect? Please read?
so putting things very simply, we have a DSL box and I use a cable to connect from there to my computer. There is only one port for this on the computer, and I snatched some peices apart when my foot got caught on the cord and tripped me causing me to snatch the cord out.
THE Cord is entirely in tact, (strong cord) but it Effed up the port on the way out. So is there like an adapter that I can plug the cord from the DSL box into so it can go somewhere and give me internet connection as normal? Like maybe a adapter that takes it from the internet port to a USB slot or something?
I just recently fixed my computer and now I screwed up my internet capabilities. I'd really like it if someone could help me out.
I can spend cash i just need to know what I can do please. Thank you?

I have a 50 VGA cable running from TV set through my walls to my Media cabinet where I have my CE devices and a Media Center PC. I am not using the VGA cable for anything it is just there, everything I have runs on HDMI. I could like to use the VGA cable to run a USB device, does anyone know of a product that will convert VGA to USB for the purposes of running USB devices, such as a webcam? Alternatively, does anyone know if I can cut the VGA adapter off the ends and re-purpose the wire without causing voltage issues and setting my house on fire?

moreOpen Question: can you use a desktop computer as a wireless router?
Hi,
My wireless router broke.
Upstairs in my house, I have internet connected directly through modem to my desktop pc (xp media center). It also has a wireless adapter connected to it, but not in use cause router broke, i also have an xbox 360 with a wireless adapter downstairs, which i had everything connected through the wireless router before it broke. i was wondering if there is a possible way my computer could send out a signal that my 360 would pick up through its network adapter. or maybe saving wireless settings to usb flash drive and connect it to my 360 through "windows connect now." Not sure how that works tho.
i thought i just ask before i go spend money on new wireless router. Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

moreOpen Question: Schedule to Disable/Enable Network Adapter?
Hello all,
I was hoping someone could give me assistance as to how to create a program or a schedule to regularly Disable and then Re-enable my wireless usb adapter. The reason I wish to do this is because I have a windows mobile phone and I use a program called T2 Remote Touch. I am regularly away from my home pc and occasionally when I attempt to login into my pc from my phone I am unable to because the usb network adapter timed out and lost connection with my router. If I could setup a program to periodically shutoff power to my wireless usb adapter or a way to create an event to disable and then re-enable the adapter right away this would fix my problem and the internet connection would be reset and thus allow me to log into my pc from my phone.
The only way I can fix this problem so far is to wait until I get back home and either unplug the adapter from the usb extension cord coming out of behind my computer or to unplug the usb extension cord with the adapter plugged into it altogether and then plug it in again. My router is only about 30 ft away in another room in the house and is not obstructed by a wall. It is in clear view of the computer if I am sitting in front of my pc so the signal shouldn't be getting too much interference. If it helps, my router is a Belkin N Wireless Router F5D8233 version 3000.
I don't know if it possible to create such an event, schedule, or a program that can do this but I would appreciate any kind of advice or help with this problem. Thanks to anyone who has the knowledge or know how to help me with this.
-Regards

I tried every USB port on front and back but all have the same problem. I also tried "resetting to factory network settings" but that didnt work either.

moreResolved Question: A question about the technology of telephones in Hong Kong VS the USA?
I just mailed a MagicJack USB device to my fiancee who currently lives in Hong Kong. (unfamiliar with what that is ? Check out this link. http://www.magicjack.com/5/index.asp) Now, (and only now, I wish it had happened to me earlier) it occurs to me that just as electrical devices designed for use in the USA wont work in all other countries without an adapter system POSSIBLY Hong Kong telephones wont plug in to an American MagicJack. I don't know. SO, question, are Hong Kong telephones essentially the same as American ones or do I need to mail her an American telephone to use in her new American MagicJack ? Not sure what category would be best to put this in but before anyone asks "why is it in this category?" I will put it in travel/Asia/Pacific because I am thinking SOMEONE out there has maybe done enough travel between here and there to know the answer. Such people may logically be reading questions posted to that category!By the way anyone who thinks it wont work in Hong Kong is WRONG, MagicJack's maker says it will work from any place on earth that has a net connection.By the way anyone who thinks it wont work in Hong Kong is WRONG, MagicJack's maker says it will work from any place on earth that has a net connection. The source of any confusion there would be in how it DOES work. You could be sitting in Hon Gong using a MagicJack and because of that be able to call the McDonald's in Lone pine Ca. USA for free but be unable to call next door to you there in Hong Kong. That is fine, I want my woman to be able to call me in the USA, her neighbors she can use her regular phone for.The source of any confusion there would be in how it DOES work.
