Open Question: Would a Wireless Bridge Work For Me?
I live in a large apartment complex at a university, and they recently installed a wireless internet connection for my building. Although my laptop picks the signal up (Speed-test reads it at a little over 7 Mbps), when I use a USB adapter, it can't pick up the signal.
My question is, to avoid having to purchase 2 wireless cards for the desktops, and 2 adapters for the xbox, can I use a wireless bridge to pick up the signal, and still maintain a wired-to-computer/xbox aspect?

I have three computers. The first one, the modem is connected to. The second one is connected via usb wireless adapter. The third one, which I just bought, has no way to connect. PLZ HELP!

moreResolved Question: Why is Linux incompatible with all of my hardware?
I wanted to try Linux because everyone says it's so great. So I tried Linux Mint just to find out most of my hardware won't function in Linux. This stuff won't work:
Lexmark printer
Asus wireless adapter
Creative webcam
Rosewill external hard drive enclosure (just a generic USB-to-SATA bridge really)
Belkin PCI-to-USB addin card
My computer's front USB/Firewire/Audio ports
My monitor, a 26" Acer, won't display at it's native 1920x1080 resolution.
I'm told I can try some NDISwrapper and my wireless "might" work, and I can manually edit some xorg.config file and my monitor "might" display properly. Screw this, why can't things "just work" the way they do in Windows 7?It's not a matter of finding drivers. There are no Linux drivers for the hardware I listed.

moreVoting Question: Connect xbox 360 to internet via internet sharing?
I'm trying to connect my xbox 360 to the internet. I use a usb receiver that allows me access to the internet through the Verizon wireless network. On windows xp I could use ICS to allow the xbox to access this connection through a switch and then the switch is connected to a Ethernet terminal on my computer. I recently did a clean install of windows 7 and allowing ICS no longer gives my xbox internet connection. I know that the ethernet driver is not installed, however, under the internet connections panel, both ethernet terminals 1 and 2 are displayed as well as the verizon device which is my internet connection.
I have tried checking the ICS box under properties of the verizon device and activating it. I have also done so for the ethernet terminals. And that gave no results.
I then unchecked the allow ICS for all connections, and tried bridging the connection between the verizon device and one of the ethernet ports, however when I right clicked, bridge connection did not come up as an option when both devices were highlighted.
I'm not really sure what else to try. Using the Verizon usb wireless receiver makes things more complicated. It worked by using ICS in xp so I'm not sure why it doesn't work in windows 7. Any suggestions would be helpful.

moreResolved Question: Ive messed Windows Media centre up (Windows7) anyway of restoring it?
Basically Sky Player wouldnt except my login/password details. Kept having a message popup saying ' lost internet connection etc...'. But, it worked when i connected my xbox 360 to the media centre and i could watch sky via that, but i wanted it on my pc. (long story and irrelevant to this problem).
So i thought it was my internet connection as my pc/360 are bridged via the network so i disabled tis and ran my pc as normal via wireless usb. All ok, net connected etc.. but i still had the same problem when i tried to log into the sky player (loss of connection).
I had a look online and there were a few suggestion ie: remove registry, delete olders etc.. so i tried it. It basically restored Media Centre to default settings.
Trouble is it wont update (so cant install sky player) and the progress bar stalls when i try to tune my tv card.
Before you say.... no i cannot use a system restore as i have turned it off (stupid i know!!!)
will i be able to fix it with my Windows 7 disk? (recovery mode maybe??)
moreResolved Question: How can I have my upstairs desktop read my downstairs desktop like an external harddrive?
What would be the easiest way? Upstairs I have Win7, Downstairs: XP. I have a Linksys Cisco wireless g-router if it can be used. I read about Bridged USB which sounds pretty decent. I also heard that you can't run 2.0 USB's more than 5 meters without a hub? Would Remote Desktop help? The most important thing is I want my Upstairs to read the Downstairs like an external drive, with folders that I can roam around in and delete and add files to. But the ultimate goal is if I could have complete control over the downstairs computer by opening programs and use of it's sound card. But that may be alot more work I would assume? Sorry for the long detail. Thank you for helping.

I have a DSL filter with two slots, one for telephone and 1 for DSL. I hook the red DSL cable into that second slot in the filter and connect it to the DSL slot on the modem. I then connect an ethernet cable from the modem to the internet slot on my router. I then connect a third cable from one of the four ports of my router to my desktop. Of course, my laptops should pick up the signal automatically.
Right now, my wireless connection is unable to access the internet. The last thing I remember doing was trying to get Opera's Bittorrent to work with my internet on my laptop (Acer). I went into my router settings (Applications and gaming->Port Authentication or port triggering, something like that)and allowed opera.exe on ports 0-6881. I clicked enable, save settings and that's when my troubles began. For the past couple hours, I have been resetting my router and modem, to no avail. I called tech support and they said the signal was fine on their side and that the problem was on my end. My parents refused to send over a tech because of the fee, just my luck.
One thing I did try was taking the ethernet cable from the router and hooking it up to my laptop directly.
What I think the problem may be
It gave an error saying it could not connect to launchmodem. This makes me think there could be a potential conflict between the router and modem, either with the modem's PPPoE 9(what we used to do when we had dail-up) or with the router's DHCP (I set the connection to DHCP). My router and modem are bridged. There isn't any encryption like WEP or WPA (I know, I know, tsk, tsk).
-I'm thinking the bridge may either be bad, or since I learned the router auto-does PPPoE login (which I forgot the username and password), it must not be using the right settings. I'm at school right now so I don't have access to my home set up.

moreResolved Question: PS3 sharing Desktop's Internet?
Ok, where to begin?
I am Running an eMachine "EL1200-07w with Vista SP2
2.00 GB of RAM
1.61 Ghz AMD Athlon Processor (2650e)
Everything is stock in the computer except the 500 GB hard drive I put in it long ago.
It has a NIC (Ethernet) and Dial Up connections
But I use a Wireless Adapter, check it out here:
http://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Wardriving-Extension-Strongest-Market/dp/B000QYGNKQ/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
I found the proper Driver for it and it works great after I set it up with a Popcorn can that is use like a Dish, but is working better than a Dish. It can hit actual download speeds of 600 KB/s (Kilo Bytes, not bits) and an Upload Speed of 100 KB/s and has a ping of 120ms, which was working great with the PS3.
-------------------------------------------------------------
A few days ago I was really racking my brain for a way to get my PS3 online, and eventually came to the idea to run Ethernet cable from the PC to PS3 and then Bridge that connection with my Wireless Internet Connection, and guess what, IT WORKED.
Problem is, is that it isn't working anymore. It worked for 2 full days.
Last night I turned off the PS3 (After playing a few hours of UT III online) and my monitor automatically switched back over to the VGA connection for my computer. I quickly noticed that it said the internet was not connected, so I tried to connect and it said in the available networks list that I was already connected, after further investigation I found that the IPV 4 and 6 where refusing to connect, even though they where enabled in the adapter options.
So I Unbridged the connections and all was fixed for my PC, but now the PS3 is screwed.
Why did it suddenly not work anymore?
Here is a list of things I have already tried and their outcomes:
Tried Wireless connection in the beginning, but the signal isn't strong enough and I can't move the PS3 any closer to the Router. So I am forced to LAN. The Router is too far away to run a cable. The only reason my PC is fine is because I have a good Wireless USB Adapter that picks up great. I know I can use my PC to do this.
Tried setting my Wireless Connection on my PC to Share it's connection, but it has a problem " An Error Occurred While Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled. The dependency service or group failed to start" (PS3 was on and has Internet Connection Enabled). I have done everything listed by an answerer in this question and it still says that:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Atf7df66tG3242el9a22Sm3sy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080721162912AA4SvL0
Then I wanted to try an Ad-Hoc, but you can only do Wireless Ad-Hoc and the PS3 doesn't show up on the list even with Network Discovery On. This would be easier if there was a Wired Ad-Hoc. Plus I then realized that the Wireless Adapter can't do anything other than share it's connection, it can't be focused on anything other than the connection to the Router because then I wouldn't have an IC.
And Lastly, I decided that maybe I should put a piece of equipment between the PC and PS3 through LAN. So I went and bought a Linksys 5 port "Workgroup Switch" and another Ethernet Cable. Plugged it in and made a connection from the Computer's NIC to the input line on the Switch and then ran the other Ethernet cable from the #1 port to the PS3 and then turned on the PS3. Then tried to see if it could do anything from that point, and NO, just a local connection to my computer.
So then I tried to set the Sharing again and it still says the same thing. SO, then I tried Bridging the connections again, still a no go, my Internet fails when I bridge them.
So, now I am stuck on what to do. I figured I would Post this while and wait on some responses while continuing my Google searches.
Thank you very much for any help, I know it's a long winded one, but I don't ask a question on here unless I just can't find it anywhere else that pertains to my situation. The Ethernet Cord I already had is a regular one that came with my old Windstream Modem that isn't used anymore.
But the New one I just bought is a CAT5e Networking Cable, I tried it straight to the PS3 from the PC and that didn't work.
I don't have control of the Router, I am paying a neighbor to share, so I can't really go over there asking to mess with the Router, I know it works just fine and is connected correctly, so That part is irrelevant.
Plus the Switch I bought auto detects the whole Cross Over business and incorporates what the cross over cord does on it's own, so you don't need the special cord, but I was forced to buy that wire because it was the only Ethernet wire they had at walmart ($10 !!! 7 Ft)
So the problem with the Topology is that I don't have another Straight through cord.
And finally, The Ad-Hoc isn't working, it does let me create it, but no matter how close I make it to my PS3, the PS3 doesn't recognize it.More on the Ad-hoc, It comes up in my Available networks and I can connect to it, but that technically doesn't make sense, how can my only wireless adapter connect to itself? Even when I do connect to it it shows no bars.
Next stuff I have just tried:
I just saw on the PS3 that it will only connect to Private Networks, and the LAN connection was Public, but when I switched it it was still just a Local connection and the ICS still isn't working.
I think my main problem to solve is why my Internet connection goes out when I bridge them, I'm going to work on that for a while.Hate it when people don't allow email.
moreResolved Question: Multiple Internet connections "bridged"....is that at all possible?
Hey all,
Recently I've seen Rogers/Telus/Bell usb sticks for 4 x 56k Internet speeds on the chip's wireless net.
Basically my question is:
Is there any way to bridge/combine the different Internet sources to one pc???
(usb stick net, network wired net, wireless cards, like even maxing out 5 pci slots on a motherboard for network cards is what I was thinking)
I thought the nicest combo would be:
Cable Internet on one network card
ADSL Internet on another network card
Bell USB stick on a usb stick
Rogers USB stick on another usb stick
Telus USB stick on another usb stick
Now I realise that 5 seperate Internet bills WOULD cost a lot each month, maybe just ADSL and cable would be awesome (till fiber becomes available, like in 10 years)
Just wanting to know if it's possible, in Windows, in Ubuntu Linux, Mac OS X? I'd love an Interrnet box to control the Internet and split it to the rest of my home's Internet needs.

So in order to get on Xbox live I have to bridge the connections. once i do that it works. but after 30 mins or so of playing it logs me off of live. well when at look at the bridge to see whats the problem it shows that the Linksys Adapter diables its self for some reason. moreResolved Question: PS3, Mobile Broadband, Marvel Vs Capcom 2, trouble getting on internet.....help?
Is there another way to do this?
Okay, so I got a card to download MvC2. I was so excited about it today. But the problem is, I can't go on PSN because I'm using a Mobile Broadband connection (Usb Modem to be specific). It's a Verizon Wireless USB760. I went storming on the internet trying to find different ways to figure out one problem after another problem. If it wasn't the access point, it was the Ip address, if it wasn't the Ip Address, it was the Dns Server, if it WASN'T the DNS Server, the signal was simply to weak. I've tried everything I possibly could with what I have, and then some!! I even tried to use a router as some sort of bridge between the computer and the Ps3 and using two different ethernet cables. (I'm on a Mac). I was thinking about just plugging it directly into the PS3, but I'm sure that probably won't work. And the only way I can redeem from the card is if I can go online on the Ps3. What I don't understand is "How can my Wii work on the modem, and not the Ps3, What's up with that?!?!" And yes, I did enable the sharing so that device can see it, and yes, I also connected the ethernet from the computer to ps3 and enabled the sharing on that. I went to OpenDns so that I could use there's, that didn't work. I just wanna Marvel Vs Capcom 2, I've never played it!! LOL! Any help would be appreciated, honestly.
And I thank you for taking some time out to read this. Warm Regards:
Rafael.
